As part of World Prematurity Day 2020, we celebrated the PReCePT programme by looking back at the incredible results achieved and thanking all the amazing people who made the programme such a success in PReCePT Celebration Week 16-20 November.

PReCePT stands for the Prevention of Cerebral Palsy in PreTerm Labour. The project was originally developed by the West of England AHSN in collaboration with University Hospitals Bristol and Weston NHS Foundation Trust, and involved both patients and staff. The PReCePT programme is reducing the incidence of cerebral palsy by offering magnesium sulphate to all eligible women in England during preterm labour (less than 30 weeks). Magnesium sulphate costs from just £1 per dose.

Here is a summary of our highlights from the week:

New film launched: PReCePT – ingredients for success

The PReCePT team created and launched an insightful new film. Colleagues from around the country share their experiences and learnings from working on the programme and discuss what made it such a success. In it we hear from Ellie Wetz, Programme Manager National PReCePT Programme, West of England AHSN and Dr Karen Luyt, PReCePT National Clinical Lead along with many other amazing colleagues and partners.

New interactive e-learning resource went live

Health Education England released a new interactive e-learning resource, designed for perinatal healthcare professionals to support education around the administration of magnesium sulphate for neuroprotection to mothers in preterm labour. Building on the successful roll out of the PReCePT programme, the module guides clinicians through the clinical benefits of administering magnesium sulphate (MgSO4) to mothers who go into labour before 30 weeks gestation. It also provides information on the neuroprotective qualities of this cost-effective and readily available drug, the detail of how it is administered and the positive impact it can have on the lives of neonates and their families.

Making an impact

The PReCePT team also created this animation which emphasises the incredible statistics the programme has achieved, such as 156 maternity units across England have adopted the programme, and for every 37 mothers who receive magnesium sulphate, we can prevent one case of cerebral palsy.

Hearing the stories

Finally, it was great to hear people share their experiences of working on the programme and hear stories of the people the programme really helped throughout the celebration week.
