Learning from Ryan’s Rule – Insights for Martha’s Rule in England

Date(s):
Tuesday 14 October 2025, 8 - 9am
Location: Online - MS Teams
Organised by: Health Innovation Network

Event summary

For more than a decade, Ryan’s Rule has been a cornerstone of patient safety in Queensland, Australia, empowering patients, families and carers to request a clinical review if a patient’s health condition is getting worse or not improving as expected. Widely recognised as a precursor to Martha’s Rule in England, it offers valuable lessons for those shaping and implementing patient safety initiatives across the NHS.

In this Health Innovation Network webinar, Shaune Gifford, Programme Manager, Statewide Clinical Deterioration, Queensland Health, who led the introduction of Ryan’s Rule across Queensland in 2013, will share first-hand insights on:

  • How Ryan’s Rule operates in Queensland
  • Key lessons learned from more than ten years of delivery
  • What England can take forward as Martha’s Rule is piloted and scaled

The session will conclude with an interactive Q&A, giving participants the opportunity to engage directly and explore how lessons from Australia can support safer, more responsive care in the NHS.

The webinar will be chaired by Alison Tavare, Primary Care Clinical Lead at Health Innovation West of England. Alison was a member of the NHS England Worry and Concern Task and Finish Group, which was established to support the patient and carer voice and underpinned the development of Martha’s Rule.

Who should attend: Health Innovation Network colleagues, NHS partners, and anyone involved in patient safety, quality improvement, or the implementation of Martha’s Rule.
